Questions Parents Ask About Montessori (FAQs)

Find answers to some of the common questions parents ask about Montessori education at HIS Omega.

At HIS Omega, our Montessori programme is for children from 2.5 to 6 years. Children learn in mixed-age environments that provide opportunities for independent work, observation and learning alongside peers.

A child spends time working with Montessori materials and engaging in activities across Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Culture. Children make purposeful choices, receive individual presentations, practise activities and develop independence within a prepared environment.

In a Montessori environment, children are not necessarily expected to do the same activity at the same time. Children may choose from appropriate activities, work independently or with others, and progress through materials according to their readiness, with guidance from the facilitator.

The five key areas are Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Culture. Together, they provide experiences that support children's physical, cognitive, language, social and cultural development.

Practical Life includes purposeful everyday activities such as transferring, pouring, arranging, folding and caring for oneself and the environment. These activities help children develop coordination, concentration, order and independence.

Sensorial activities help children explore and refine their senses. Montessori materials allow children to compare qualities such as size, shape, colour, texture and dimension.

Montessori Mathematics begins with concrete, hands-on experiences. Children use materials to explore quantity, numbers, place value and mathematical operations before gradually moving towards abstract understanding.

The prepared environment allows children to access appropriate materials, make purposeful choices, complete activities and care for their surroundings. With practice and guidance, children gradually become more capable of doing things independently.

The Montessori work cycle is an extended, uninterrupted period in which children can choose meaningful work, receive presentations, practise activities and develop concentration without frequent interruption.

Montessori supports foundational skills such as concentration, independence, language, mathematics, coordination, problem-solving and social development. Children gradually move from concrete experiences towards more abstract understanding, building foundations for their continued learning.
